PID Turin
Province
Made by the Ultramundum Foundation on request from the Turin Provincial government, the
virtual model of the antire province allows for the interactive free exploration of the
entire surface on a standard personal computer.
It is not a map, but a true software diorama, with many details, of the entire province
surface. This product will be the base platform for a variety of applications made by
citizens, public boides, organizations and companies.
By using this 3D model tools the technical departments of the Procince will be able to
visualize any project in an interactive manner and show it through the internet to other
departments or the citizens.
In time new multimedia contents will be added to this platform, creating a 3D
encichlopaedia of the Province.
Users can position themselves at any distance from the ground, finding all building
that are really there, as well as roads, railroads and rivers.
The reconstructed area is so large that it would impossible to process it on a standard
computer. A dynamic data loading and detail genartion algorith has been developed. All
data, derived from official cartography, have been reprocessed to be usabe in real-time.
Many layers with decreasing resolution have been incapsulated in Tabulae and are used at
different distances of the user from the ground.
Data on soil characteristics allowed use of Foundation's exclusive automatica detail
generators.
Buildings are drawn as yellow prisms and will be substituted by realistic models when
specific automatic detail generators will be available. Note that more than four millions
buildings are currently on display.
The Foundation can arrange interactive demonstrations on request, because this product
can not be freely distributed yet.
