Turin model for
the Open Labs event
Produced by Ultramundum Foundation with "A come Ambiente" museum, derived
from 3D Turin, the digital map for the "Open labs" event is the first practical
use of the 3D Turin model outside of the Turin city Council departments.
The "open labs" event, with the support of many institutions, opened the
research laboratories of more than 70 high-level organizations of Turin and Piedmont
region.
The digital map has been an innovation tool, allowing the interactive three-dimensional
exploration of the area. Insted of a standard printed map a digital, modern and
spectaculat tool.
The places opened for the event have been pinpointed, starting from their mail
addresses, transformed into geographical coordinates and poistioned insede the 3D Turin
model. In this way spatials relations between labs and their positions relative to
specifical urban areas have became visible.
For many days an interactive installation, with cyber spheres, has given to the public
the opportunity of interacting with the model in an easy and spectacular way. Each person
was able to move a "steampunk"-looking sphere selecting the place to visit in
3D. The exibition had a great success, especially among young people.
Many places have an associated slide show, starting after the virtual landing on their
position.
This projects shows a very effective use of 3D models of urban areas. Thanks to virtual
representation, geographical-positioned data get an high-level media impact. It's
extremely easy to position geographical databases in UltraPeg products.
The software has been distributed on CD-Rom to all participants and to the media. It is
also downloadable from this site.
